THE 4 MOST COMMON MASTER’S ADMISSION INTERVIEW QUESTIONS (AND HOW TO ANSWER THEM)

If your MSc or MBA application requires an interview and the thought of it bothers you… you are not alone.

Like job interviews— even though less formal—a Master’s admission interview can be a decider whether you get accepted. So you have to take it seriously.

To help you prepare, here are common but crucial questions and how to answer them:

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

This question sets the tone for the interview. The key is to give a concise but strong answer that helps interviewers:

– Understand your academic & professional background

– See how well you align with the program, &

– Get insight into your interests & goals.

Give a 1 to 2 minutes response as shown on the next page–combining all the elements mentioned above.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I’m [Your Name], and I recently completed my undergraduate degree in [Your Course] from [Your University]. During my studies, I developed a strong interest in [Your Area of interest], particularly in [Get specific]. My final-year research on the impact of [share more details] deepened my passion for the field. After graduation, I worked as a [related role/s you worked, where I gained hands-on experience analysing [Share what you did].

Now, I’m eager to advance my knowledge and develop practical skills in [The field]. That’s why I’m excited about your MSc in [course of study] program. Its strong focus on [share what you like about the program] fits perfectly with my long-term goal of working in [area or field you want to work] and contributing to [areas you will like to contribute or be of value].

2. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS COURSE/UNIVERSITY?

This could be the expert tutors or the program offers modules that will help you gain a deeper understanding of your area of interest. Their world class facilities, teaching styles, or graduates being gainfully employed could be what attracted you.

Be honest and specific. Show genuine enthusiasm. Also connect it to your background and future goalskeeping it structured and concise. 

3. WHERE DID YOU SEE YOURSELF IN X YEARS?

This assesses your career aspirations, commitment to the field, and how well the postgraduate program aligns with your long-term goals. It’s expected that you’re not taking the course simply to stay busy. So you want to show career alignment in your answer.

Tell where you want to be professionally, roles you want to work, and how the program will help you get there.

4.. WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE ABOUT THE COURSE/UNIVERSITY?

Like job interviews, asking questions shows you’re engaged and interested in the program. And yeah, you’re still being assessed… so it’s not a time to be passive. Lame questions or no questions at all is, well, not impressive.

Some good questions to ask are: course-specific questions, career and industry connections, faculty and research opportunities, student support and experience, etc

Where do students go after finishing their Master’s?

Do you offer any scholarships?

What makes your program unique?

Do you have any mentoring opportunities?

What are graduates of the program doing now?

What would graduates say was the most valuable thing about the postgraduate programme?’

How does the course utilize its links to industry?
