How To Make Your School Application Stand Out

by Tobi

If you’re applying to study and migrate abroad, you know it’s not a piece of cake.

You may be juggling between a full-time job and other responsibilities. The process can feel overwhelming. If you’ve applied to multiple schools without success, or you’re just getting started, here are important areas to check before hitting “submit.”

Let’s start with #1.

1) CGPA REQUIREMENTS

Your academic record, especially your CGPA, plays a crucial role in graduate school admissions.
Many programs have minimum CGPA requirements, and if your CGPA is lower than the average for admitted students, it could impact your chances.

Be sure to check the CGPA requirements for each university and program, and focus on applying to those where you meet the qualifications. But all hope isn’t lost. If you really like a program at a university and still want to apply, these are steps you can take to further strengthen your application.

2) Weak Statement of purpose (SOP)

An SOP that doesn’t clearly explain why you’re interested in the program or how it aligns with your goals can come across as weak and unfocused, which may hurt your chances of admission.

Your SOP should present a compelling narrative about your background, aspirations, and motivation for pursuing this degree, persuading the admissions committee that you are a great fit. Without this clarity, they may overlook your application.
Additionally, make sure your career goals and interests align well with what the program offers.

3.) Insufficient or Generic Letters of Recommendation

A strong letter of recommendation should provide specific, meaningful examples of your skills and strengths.

Generic, vague references or letters from people who don’t know you well can weaken your application. Ensure that your recommenders list relevant skills and experiences that align with the program, as missing details or a lack of relevance may fail to convince the admissions committee.

4) Limited Relevant Experience or Skills

Graduate programs, especially competitive ones, often seek applicants with relevant experience, whether it’s through work, research, or volunteer roles. For research-based programs, a lack of research experience can be a drawback, while in professional programs, practical experience in the field is highly valued. A lack of experience or professional gaps could make you a less competitive candidate, so it’s important to demonstrate skills and achievements that are relevant to the program’s focus.

Applying to study abroad is more than just meeting basic requirements; it’s about showcasing your strengths, aligning your goals with the program, and presenting yourself as a unique, valuable candidate.

Don’t let initial setbacks discourage you. By paying attention to these key areas you can turn things around and boost your chances of admission. Stay focused, be persistent, and remember, each step you take brings you closer to achieving your dream of studying and growing abroad. Good luck!
